5 Fun Things to Do in the Northern Neck this Winter

  • Posted on

Even in winter, the Northern Neck offers plenty to do. Here are five activities you won’t want to miss:

Stan’s Skateland

You may have heard me talk about it before, but winter is a perfect time to hit Stan’s on a weekend. Go with the whole family for a fun activity that even the sullen teens can get into (I know because I have one). Rent some skates and roll around to fun music and all of the classics, including a limbo competition (my son actually won one night). There is a great snack bar to keep you fueled until you close out the place. Our kids want to visit every time we visit.

Winter Winery Tours

The Northern Neck is home to several fantastic wineries, and winter is the perfect time to enjoy a tasting without the summer crowds. Take a scenic road trip to Dog and Oyster Vineyard for a cozy wine-tasting experience, complete with stunning views of the river. Pair your wine with a local cheese board for the ultimate winter indulgence.

Best Fishing in the Northern Neck

Winter fishing on the Potomac River can be a peaceful and rewarding experience. The winter offers prime fishing opportunities for those looking to reel in bass, catfish, perch, or rockfish. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a novice, there’s nothing quite like fishing in the serene winter landscape, with fewer boats on the water and the chance to catch that elusive big one and our dock is the perfect place to fish.

Winter Birdwatching at Westmoreland State Park

Winter offers some of the best birdwatching opportunities in the Northern Neck, and Westmoreland State Park is an ideal spot. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply enjoy nature, take a peaceful hike along the park’s trails and keep an eye out for migratory birds. The park is quiet in winter, giving you a chance to connect with nature in a serene, beautiful setting.

The Best of Winter Dining in the Northern Neck

After a day of exploring the Northern Neck, you’ll want a delicious meal to round out your experience. Luckily, winter is a great time to enjoy intimate dining at some of the area’s finest restaurants. Check out Yesterday’s Family Restaurant, which serves up local seafood and other favorites in a cozy, charming atmosphere (we love their 3 course dinners with fried green beans), or The Northern Neck Burger for their amazing burgers (my personal favorite is the Truffle burger)and out of this world “twister chips” (think spiral fried from the fair) and “freak shakes” (aka outrageous milk shakes with toppings like a slice of cake).

While winter is serene and beautiful, we know many of you are already thinking about summer fun! Easthaven is the perfect waterfront getaway for family vacations, couples’ retreats, or a relaxing solo escape.
